1. Keep the Discus tank temperature at about 86 degrees. Any lower than 82-84, they are more easily susceptible to developing parasitic diseases. If the Discus seem stressed in any way, or if you suspect disease, the first step is to slowly raise the temperature to 88 to 90 degrees, before administering any medications. However, if you are fairly sure it's on their "outside" or a bacterial problem, don't raise the temperature. For more details on disease diagnosis and treatment see the Disease section on the main menu. 2. When cleaning filter components, use some drained tank water, not tap water! Chlorinated tap water will kill the established bacteria in filter sponges and cartridge frames. 3. Don't use nets, glass cleaning sponges or other items with multiple tanks! If you have any disease, it may be transferrred to the other tank. This stuff may seem trivial, but you'll find out the hard way if it happens to you!! (Same reason you don't dump pet store water into your tank!) Some pet stores use the same water circulated between all their tanks. This means any disease is transferred to all the tanks. Hopefully, you haven't bought Discus from a store with such a system! Also, don't buy Discus that appear extremely dark and cower in the corner of the tank! 4. You will know your Discus are healthy and happy if they come to the front of tank when you come into the room or, at least near the tank. They are very friendly, curious and fond of their keeper when they are healthy! 5. Don't keep a Discus tank in a hallway, a child's room or any other area with frequent heavy traffic. They are very sensitive to vibration and will jump and be stressed at any hard noises transferred to the tank. Discus also like, according to the experts, a tank that is not too low to the floor. They like to see the keeper's face and don't like constant activity above them.
